Sometimes your doctor will ask for a stool sample for testing. This can help diagnose some serious diseases of the digestive tract, such as parasites, bacteria, and even cancer. X Research Resources This is annoying, but tests will prove that you are healthy.
Do not take any medication that can affect the stool sample. The stool sample must be solid, so you should avoid taking certain medications before taking the sample. Medications that can soften your stool include Maalox, mineral oil, antacids, and Imodium or Loperone. Even if you have used barium contrast, the solution used to x-ray your digestive tract to show any abnormalities, you should delay taking a stool sample.
Consult a doctor. Your doctor will provide all equipment for stool samples, including a stool sample storage container. Ask your doctor about the examination procedure and also if you can get a “cap”. Follow the instructions and read the procedures to be followed for each device.
Keep in mind that toilet water, urine, paper, and soap can damage the stool sample, so be careful not to contaminate the sample with these items. Prepare in advance for sampling.
Prepare a hat for the toilet. The cap is a plastic product, similar to its name, and is used to collect stool so that the sample does not come into contact with water. Ask for a doctor’s hat as it is easier to pass stools. The cap is placed exactly in the toilet bowl.
You put the hat on the toilet by opening the cutting board and placing the hat in the bowl and lowering the cutting board again. Sit on the toilet in a bowl covered with a hat.
You can also wrap the toilet in plastic wrap. If the doctor doesn’t have a lid, you can also wrap the bowl in plastic wrap. Lift the toilet seat and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Lower the cutting board onto the plastic sheet and fix it.
You can also stick plastic foil on the bowl and fix it better.
Before defecating, make a small indentation in the plastic where the stool sample will be.
You can also use newspaper and pull it over the bowl. As a last resort, you can use a large sheet of newspaper. Lift the toilet seat and stretch a large sheet of newspaper over the bowl and lower the cutting board back down.
You can also stick newspaper on the cutting board for better fixation.
You can also pinch the center of the newspaper to make room for the stool sample.
Drain in the prepared place. Urinate first to avoid breaking the stool sample. Whether you’re collecting samples at home or at the doctor’s office, prepare a plate with a lid or plastic wrap in advance. Collect all stool samples, making sure they do not come into contact with toilet water.
Place the sample in the container. Open the container your doctor gave you. He must have a small spoon. Use a spoon to put a small amount of feces into the container. Try to get it out a little from both sides and from the center of the chair.
The size of the stool sample varies depending on the type of test. Sometimes your doctor will give you a container filled with fluid with a red line around the edge. You must fill the container with the stool sample in such a way that the liquid in the container rises to the red line. If you collect the sample in another container, the size of the wine ball will suffice.
Disposal of sample material. Flush the rest of the feces/plastic wrap into the toilet. Dispose of feces into the toilet and cover/plastic wrap and dispose of other waste in a garbage bag. Tie a knot in the bag and store it where it won’t be felt.
Store the sample in the refrigerator. If possible, you should return the sample as soon as possible. If you cannot return the sample, store it in the refrigerator. Place the stool sample in a container in a bag and store in the refrigerator. Label with your name, pick-up date and time. Choose an opaque cover so that no one can see the stool sample.
Give the sample to the doctor as soon as possible. Under no circumstances should you wait more than 24 hours for the sample to be returned to your doctor. The bacteria in your sample grow and change. Doctors usually want to send a stool sample back within two hours to get an accurate result.
Arrange a visit to your doctor and find out about the results of the collection.
